University student dies after shooting at housing complex near Scenic Highway | Crime/Police

A Southern University student has died after an early morning shooting Saturday at a student housing complex near the school, Baton Rouge police said.

According to BRPD spokesman Lt. Don Coppola, authorities received a call about a shooting at the Cadence Apartments shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, they discovered Javonte Barber, 22, on the ground near his vehicle, apparently with gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital but later died.

Coppola said police are investigating the shooting as an attempted carjacking. Two minors, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and incarcerated in the juvenile detention center on one count each of first degree murder.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Southern University confirmed that Barber was a student at the school.

“The University sends its condolences to the student’s family,” the statement said. “The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating and no further information is available at this time.”

Counseling services are offered to all students at Southern University. The school urged students seeking counseling to contact or call (225) 771-2480. Walk-in support will be available beginning Monday at 8 a.m., or immediate support can be reached at (225) 368-9602.

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
